Planning estimates only

CampingMath provides general planning estimates based on simplified formulas and the information you enter. Nothing on this site is professional, medical, engineering, survival, or safety advice, and no calculator result is a guarantee of any outcome.

Weather

Weather is unpredictable and can change quickly, especially at elevation or near water. Temperature, wind, precipitation, and storms can all differ substantially from forecasts. Always check current, local forecasts before and during your trip, and be prepared to change plans.

Hypothermia and heat-related illness

Sleeping bag and clothing recommendations on this site are rough comfort estimates, not medical guarantees. Individual cold and heat tolerance varies enormously based on health, hydration, food intake, fatigue, and body composition. Hypothermia and heat exhaustion or heat stroke are serious medical conditions. Learn to recognize the warning signs and seek qualified medical attention if you suspect either.

Fire safety

Firewood estimates on this site do not account for local burn bans, fire danger levels, or campground-specific rules, all of which can change daily. Always check current restrictions before building a fire, keep fires within designated rings, never leave a fire unattended, keep water or dirt nearby to extinguish it, and fully extinguish (cold to the touch) before leaving or sleeping.

Fuel-burning appliances

Propane and other fuel-burning appliances produce carbon monoxide, an odorless and potentially lethal gas. Never use fuel-burning appliances — including stoves, heaters, and lanterns — inside a tent, camper, or other enclosed space unless the specific product is explicitly designed, labeled, and approved for that use by its manufacturer. Follow all manufacturer instructions for ventilation and clearance.

Food storage and safety

Cooler ice estimates on this site are for general planning and do not guarantee any specific internal temperature. Use a thermometer to verify that perishable food stays at a safe temperature, follow local guidance on food storage (including bear-resistant storage where required), and discard food that may have spoiled.

Trail conditions and hiking time

Hiking time estimates are based on simplified, transparent formulas and cannot account for your specific trail's current condition, weather, river crossings, wildlife, navigation difficulty, injury, group dynamics, or unexpected delays. Always carry navigation tools you know how to use, tell someone your planned route and return time, and build in a safety margin — especially near sunset.

Altitude

Altitude affects both hiking pace and sleep warmth in ways that vary significantly between individuals and with acclimatization. Altitude illness can be serious. If you are traveling to unfamiliar elevations, learn the symptoms of altitude illness and acclimatize appropriately.

Equipment ratings

Manufacturer specifications for tents (person capacity), sleeping bags (comfort/lower-limit/extreme temperature ratings), sleeping pads (R-value), and coolers vary by brand and testing method, and real-world performance depends on the specific product, its condition, and how it's used. Always check the manufacturer's own specifications for equipment you own or are considering buying, and use this site's outputs as a starting point, not a final word.

Your responsibility

You are solely responsible for your own safety and decision-making, and for the safety of anyone in your care, while camping or hiking. CampingMath and its operators are not responsible for any injury, loss, or damage that results from reliance on any estimate provided by this site. See our Terms of Use for additional limitations.
