About CampingMath
CampingMath is a small, focused set of calculators that answer the questions campers and hikers actually ask before a trip: what size tent do I need, will my site fit everything, how much firewood or ice should I bring, and how long will this hike really take.
Why we built this
Most camping "calculators" online are really just unit converters, and most gear advice online is either a spreadsheet or a forum argument. CampingMath sits in between: real formulas, adjusted for the messy variables that actually change your trip (weather, terrain, pack weight, group size), explained in plain language instead of hidden behind a single suspiciously precise number.
Part of a family of planning tools
CampingMath is part of a small family of practical, no-nonsense planning sites, alongside Backyard Math (yard and landscaping projects) and Split Math (splitting costs and bills fairly). Each site follows the same philosophy: clear inputs, honest outputs, and no accounts or paywalls.
How we approach accuracy
- Every calculator shows the formula or logic behind its result in plain language.
- We label recommendations separately from exact mathematical outputs.
- We use ranges instead of a single falsely precise number whenever real-world conditions vary widely.
- We round purchasing recommendations upward, because you can't buy 0.7 bundles of firewood.
- Every default value can be overridden — your gear and your trip are the ones that matter.
None of this replaces professional judgment, manufacturer instructions, or good trip planning. Read our disclaimer before you rely on any estimate for safety-relevant decisions.
Questions or feedback
Every calculator page has a five-star rating widget — that feedback directly shapes what we improve next. For anything else, see our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
